26.02.2003 - Funeral for a Friend/Million Dead/Yourcodenameis:Milo - Newcastle University

Funeral for a Friend were touring their debut album at the time, I played it loads around this time plus the two EP's they had done.

Million Dead were really good heavy hardcore, they weren't around long but Frank Turner has gone on to be successful in his solo career.

Yourcodenameis:Milo were pretty decent, local band that for a while always seemed to be supporting a lot of the gigs all over.

11.02.2003 - Steve-O/Lightyear - Northumbria University

03.02.2003 - Reel Big Fish/The Starting Line/Sugarcult - Newcastle University

First gig I went to by myself, no one I knew at the time wanted to go!

Reel Big Fish weren't too bad live, not a band I would listen to much today.

Starting Line were pop punk, similar to a lot of bands on Drive Thru records (don't think they were on that label) or bands that were on an American Pie soundtrack!

Suagrcult were another pop punk band, after their set they threw into the crowd some 3" CD's and badges, somehow, I got a badge in the melee of people scrambling to get them!

04.12.2002 - The Vandals/Audio Karate/Tsunami Bomb - Newcastle University

Mainly went to see Tsunami Bomb play but was also worth seeing the Vandals play.

Audio Karate were fairly decent pop punk, have had their song Nintendo 89 in my head while writing this up. Also looks like they have released a new album this year on Kung Fu Records!

Should have some photos I took somewhere of this gig.

Got the back of my ticket signed by 3 out of 4 members of Tsunami Bomb.

17.11.2002 - Foo Fighters/Cave In - Telewest Arena

Advert for 2002 tour

An 18th birthday present off me mam! First arena gig at the Telewest Arena, now the Utilita Arena.

Don't have a ticket stub for this as they took the whole ticket off you and gave you a pink wristband instead.

Missed half of Cave In's set as mate didn't want to leave Wetherspoons! Though what I did see of Cave In was canny, though would have preferred to have seen the whole set mind!

Foo Fighters were canny, don't think I could be chewed to see them now as their output has been hit or miss. Don't get me wrong they can create some bangers but a lot of filler. Plus, now I'm older I'm not a fan of gigs where it feels like I'm squashed in!

Did take some really shit photos on disposable camera, though never scanned them in, maybe will add to here if I ever do!

Next day in sixth form you could tell who had been to see them as everyone was still wearing the wristband for it!

22.05.2002 - American Head Charge/Vacant Stare - Newcastle University

Only went to this gig as a mate didn't want to go alone!

Also, the first night I ever got served a pint underage without being asked for ID which is hilarious as when I was 17 I looked about 11! Though was given a reality check off a mate that it was in the Percy Arms and they didn't give a fuck and served everyone!

I’m sure there were three bands that played this gig but have no idea who the third band was, if there even was one?! For years I always thought Orange Goblin played but I doubt it, or maybe I thought the band had Orange in the name?

Vacant Stare were from London, don't think they were around long, part of the UK Nu-metal scene I guess though have read them described as a hard rock band with a heavy rock edge. They were shite.

American Head Charge were also shite, nu-metal and I kind of thought they were doing the whole Slipknot idea of wearing stage costumes.

Scan of the ticket came from an old portable hard drive looks like it's fucked a bit!

28.01.2002 - Andrew WK/Black Rebel Motorcyle Club/Lostprophets/The Coral - Newcastle University

Another NME tour with a mix of different bands!

Lostprophets were just around this time becoming massive due to the single, Shinobivsdragonninja and Andrew WK was if I recall in the top ten thanks to Party Hard!

Only caught bits of the Coral, who at the time I wasn't keen on so me and my mates were hanging in a part of the venue where you couldn't see the bands but still hear them play.

Lostprophets were good live and was the first and only time I ever went crowd surfing, got punched in the balls off someone, who got my foot in their face for that!

B.R.M.C. I did enjoy, first album is still great, though never arsed myself with the others!

Only saw 4 songs of Andrew WK's set as one of the mates I was with wanted to home, so I went and got the metro back with him. Wasn't till a couple of years back did I know Andrew WK had a link to the noise band Wolf Eyes.

Other things that happened at this gig.

Mates’ girlfriend acting like she was mortal and telling everyone she was drunk when she wasn't!

Getting caught and grassed up for underage drinking by one of our schoolteachers that was also at the gig!

Mate getting his bus pass signed by Ian Watkins, the nonce from Lostprophets - mean got my ticket signed by him as well but mean it was the ticket and not a bus pass. Mate now claims this never happened, but it did! Think you can see a bit of the signature on my ticket as he signed on the back!

Looking back on that stuff, makes me wonder if the singer from Lostprophets was scanning the area for underage lasses...

08.12.2001 - New Found Glory/Fenix TX/RX Bandits - Newcastle University

You may notice the date on the title for this gig is different to that on the ticket.

This gig was rearranged after the 9/11 attacks in America, a lot of flights in and out of America had been cancelled which affected this tour.

Full of pop-punk and ska fun!

Was a good gig, New Found Glory were still in their early hey days, think the second album had just came out or the third was due out.

Fenix TX only ever did two albums, and I always liked both so glad to have seen them play, did miss them when they played years later like!

RX Bandits were a ska punk band, they were decent this night.

05.11.2001 - Fear Factory/Godflesh/Janus Stark/Sugacoma - Newcastle University

First heavy hitter gig maybe, depends on if you consider Fear Factory a heavy band!

Raging Speedhorn were supposed to be on this tour but pulled out, not sure to exactly why. I had been shitting myself to see them as saw one of their music videos and the kids in the mosh pit were going apeshit. As short arse, I thought I would have been launched halfway over the venue.

Sugacoma were fucking awful, think they maybe got on this gig as their Britney Spears nu metal cover of Crazy(?) was popular....

Janus Stark were canny from what I remember, wasn't to a few years later did I realise the guitarist was also the live guitarist for the Prodigy!

Fear Factory came on and played, explained that Godflesh had broken down, so they were going to play so save people waiting about. At the time I loved Fear Factory so was buzzing to see them!

Halfway through their set they stopped and informed us Godflesh had arrived so were going to let them play a bit as the crowd needed to hear them if they weren't aware of who they were.

They were class despite maybe only getting to do 2 or 3 songs(?) before Fear Factory finished their set.

I ended up buying a Fear Factory wrist sweat band thing from them at this gig, not sure why and I deffo don't have it anymore! Think I wore it a lot to gigs and thought I must have looked fucking mint wearing it....

23.07.2001 - Miocene/Porcelain Roach - Newcastle University

Can't recall anything outstanding or weird happening at this gig.

Was at the Globe bit of Newcastle University and was a bit of a sweatbox with it being late July.

Miocene were good, think they seemed a lot heavier to me then when I previously saw them.

Guess with them headlining they had more time for their set to be how they wanted it to be?!

Porcelain Roach, I really can't remember! I want to say a heavy rock band?!

17.05.2001 - Sunna/Hell is for Heroes - Newcastle University

Nearly didn't go to this gig as the weekend before I had been arrested for shoplifting a Deftones CD from HMV! Also think this was a gig before my Business Studies GCSE exam, though not 100% sure about that...

Sunna back at Newcastle University, but this time in the main venue. Probably a bad idea as recall the gig not being that packed, however still was a good night.

Think this gig was one of the first tours Hell is for Heroes did as they didn't put out their debut until 2003, I think. Do know some of the band used to be in Symposium.

Sunna at this gig, gave out CD booklets for an EP you could get for free if you filled in the form and sent away, I ended up getting one signed by the band, would have to double check but don't think I got all the band. I did pick up another to send away for the CD but never got the CD!!!!!

Only other thing about this gig was the metro home as we got it from Haymarket and went the long way home which was entertaining seeing some drunk bloke run off the metro to be sick but flip over the fencing!

26.02.2001 - Sunna/Crackout/Miocene - Newcastle University

A month after my first gig and think under the recommendation of a mate got tickets to this gig.

Again, at Newcastle University, but elsewhere in a place that was called the Globe. A much smaller venue than the basement for the last gig.

Sunna were just becoming big and not sure if it was around this time (maybe later) one of their songs was used in the film Hollow Man. They were alright, mean they must have been for me to see them two or three months later!

Crackout were really good, ended up buying a two-track demo tape and a pin from them. Still have both, though the cover the for the tape is long gone. Someone offered me £20 for the tape on discogs a few months back!

Miocene probably should have been bigger than what they were. Really good alt-metal, looking them up now, looks like they did do three albums before calling it a day.

Think the signature on the ticket is from one of the members of Miocene, Graham?

22.01.2001 - JJ72/Amen/Alfie/Starsailor - Newcastle University

First ever gig, which was an NME tour hence the strange (I suppose) line up.

Went with a few mates with school, one who thought he didn't have to buy a ticket in advance and just rock up and pay on the door!

Got there and the queue was massive and think it had been raining, plus mid-January it was canny cold. Mate waited with us in the queue for about 40 minutes until he got to the entrance and told it was sold out!

We had mainly gone to see Amen as we were, I guess, moshers?! I did enjoy the Amen set and jumped around like the 16-year-old twat I was at the time! Ended up getting an Amen postcard for the album at the time signed by Casey Chaos, which I still have somewhere!

Starsailor, Alfie and JJ72 were pretty shit. Not even sure what happened to Alfie after that, I think they did return at a later date. Starsailor and JJ72 did seem to be more successful for a while.

One daft moment that always stays in my mind, is two of the lasses that were in our group were talking during the bands and it went quiet when the song ended only for one to say too loudly, "You're 16 now, you can have sex!", the other lass went very red as a few people looked at them!

In hindsight, it isn't funny but as a teenager it seemed so hilarious at the time!

21.06.2026 - Marina Zispin/SQ Mice/Modern Heaven - The Lubberfiend, Newcastle

Another hot night at the Lubberfiend on a Sunday! Don't really know much about Modern Heaven, they are a duo from Melbourne, Australia...
